A Few Yard Sale Finds

I've been hitting a lot of yard sales lately and just wanted to share a few of my latest treasures! I found this vintage ice cream maker for $3.00! I'm not sure exactly what I'm going to do with it yet, but I do know I won't be making ice cream with it anytime soon!

 

Right now, it's sitting next to the fireplace until I find some inspiration for it. Maybe it would be nice for a centerpiece, or decorated with some branches or American flags for the 4th of July? Anyone have any suggestions?

I also found this old vintage frame. It was in pretty bad shape and I even had to glue it together in some places! I really liked all the carving and thought it was worth the $3.00 they were asking for it.

Now repainted and distressed, it fits perfectly with the vintage plate that was yet another
yard sale find!  

I have been wanting to hang a plate inside a vintage frame! I've seen that done a lot lately, in blogland and on pinterest! But, a word to the wise...  use a teacup hook with a safety latch when hanging plates! That's a lesson I learned the hard way! One of my kids accidentally bumped a plate (when he was playing Star Wars with his light saber) and it fell down and broke!

Anyway, I've been finding some really great stuff at yard sales and have been busy working on redoing a few things. Hope everyone's summer is going well so far!

A Favorite Summer Dessert!

One of my all time favorite summer desserts is Lemon Chiffon Pie! I've had this recipe since I was first married and make it every summer using fresh lemons picked from my mom's lemon tree! I just made it again yesterday for Father's Day!

This pie is so light and fluffy! It's easy to make and is a perfect dessert for summer, especially with a summer BBQ!

Lemon Chiffon Pie

Mix 1 envelope unflavored gelatin with 1/2 cup sugar. Set aside.

In heavy sauce pan, beat 4 egg yolks, 1/3 cup lemon juice, 2/3 cup water. Heat in pan and slowly stir in gelatin mixture. Stir until boiling and remove from heat. Add 1 tsp. lemon zest (grated lemon peel). Chill until partially set.

Beat egg whites until stiff and gradually add 1/2 cup sugar.

Fold cool mixture into egg whites until blended. Put in baked pie crust.

Chill.

Garnish with sweetened whipped cream and lemon zest!

Enjoy!

Good-Bye Ugly Ceiling Fan!

I've been looking for an old brass type chandelier that I could redo. I always have my eye out for one when I'm out at yard sales, but have never found one! So when I spotted this chandelier hanging in our local antique mall for only $20.00, I grabbed it right up! It already had all the work (painting) done for me and at this point anything would look better than my old ceiling fan!

It also came with the cute little crystals which I just love! But, it really needed a ceiling medallion (if you give a mouse a cookie) and so went to Home Depot to buy one. While I was there, I found this very same chandelier brand new. It was $46.88 and came in nickel or a nutmeg finish. 

Good-bye ugly ceiling fan! We won't miss you!

Meet Skippy!

Skippy is our new little chihuahua! We've had her for almost two weeks now! When we got her, her name was Violet, but I wanted to call her something different. Finally, after almost two weeks of trying to figure out the right name for her, last night we decided on Skippy! We chose that name because when she starts playing and running around the house just as fast as she can, her two little back legs look like they're skipping! It's so much fun to watch and we'll all be laughing ourselves silly! Some of the other names we considered were Tinkerbell, Cupcake, Daisy, Lucy and Taffy, but they just didn't seem to fit her personality. 

She really is the sweetest little dog and so funny, too! When she eats, she will get a little kibble in her mouth .... throw it down .... pounce on it .... get it in her mouth again .... shake her head .... throw it again and do the same thing over before she finally eats it! (She only does that with a few pieces of food). 

Unfortunately, she belonged to a family that could not keep her anymore and they needed to find her a new home. Since, I've really, really, really been wanting to get a little dog, I decided to take her! She's 2 years old, doesn't chew on anything (except her toys) and is house broken! We've had puppies before and it's kind of nice to not have to go through that stage with her. We already have another dog, a White German Shepherd named Annie. Now Annie is a very good dog and plays with our neighbors little dogs and is gentle with them, so I knew she would be nice to Skippy. However, Skippy has already been trying to put Annie in her place and Annie has been very tolerant of her. Finally, after Skippy growled at her, Annie gave her a little nudge with her nose to say, I'm the boss here!

Skippy is such a sweet little dog! I'm so glad we have her!
