There's an old abandoned apple orchard that not too many people know about in our local mountains. Every fall, for the past 20 some years, my sister Robbie and I along with our kids, plan a special day to go to this orchard and pick apples!
The apple trees are over 100 years old, and still produce lots of delicious apples! There are many varieties, as well! Of course, all the best apples are always at the tops of the trees!
No problem, I just climb up and pick them!
Our older kids are much too busy to go apple picking now. But, our two youngest Jaclyn and Holland still love this family tradition! They are great little apple pickers, too!
I think the part they like best is knowing that we will be making lots of applesauce and pies! Here's a family favorite recipe I always make from the apples we've picked.
Apple Crisp
4 cups peeled and sliced apples
1/4 cup orange juice
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup flour
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 cup butter, cut-up
pinch of salt
Preheat oven to 375. Butter 9 inch glass pie plate. Arrange apples in pie plate, heaping in center. Pour orange juice over apples. Combine sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. Cut in butter until coarse crumbs. Sprinkle over apples. Bake 45 - 50 minutes.
Blessings,
